AROUND THE PUMP ROOM
Kuljeet Farrar CCP, FANZCP, Flinders Medical Centre, South Australia
Well it has been an interesting year so far. South Australia dealt with devastating bush fires in January with two-thirds of Kangaroo Island destroyed with the tragic loss of two lives. Also, the world famous 7-star Southern Ocean Lodge was completely razed to the ground. With that inauspicious start to the year, we were hoping things could only get better.
South Australia was one of the first states to close its borders at midnight on March the 15th as a result of the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic. We had a total of 444 infections, four deaths but no patients on ECMO. Of those deaths, two were returning passengers from the Ruby Princess cruise ship.
The majority of positive cases were from people returning from interstate and overseas. The largest pocket of community acquired infections were from a group of baggage handlers at Adelaide Airport; this cluster was believed to have become infected from handling the baggage of a COVID-19 positive passenger.
The Royal Adelaide Hospital was the designated COVID-19 hospital in SA due to the RAH having a greater number of negative pressure single rooms.
Life in SA has returned to a new normal. All pubs, restaurants, gyms and cinemas have now re-reopened but with social
distancing practices in place. I am sure I speak for others in saying that it’s hard to get out of the isolation rut and actually make an effort to go out!
The upside of not being able to leave SA, is that we get to explore our beautiful state. The family and I recently spent a week in the beautiful Flingers Ranges. Wilpena Pound would have to be one of the most amazing natural wonders around.
Fortunately, we have all been doing well here in the Perfusion Department at FMC. In April, Annette was awarded her doctorate for her thesis ‘MicroRNA Levels, hypoxia and cardiopulmonary bypass in the development of acute kidney injury’. Congratulations Dr. Annette Mazzone – we know how hard you worked!
Congratulations to Vijay Valiyapurayil on his recent successful viva voce exam. He is now registered with the ABCP as having been granted ‘Qualification Equivalency to the ABCP Certified Clinical Perfusionist’.
Congratulations also go out to Richard Newland who married his lovely bride Katherine in March.
And lastly Happy Birthday to Prof Rob Baker who celebrated a significant birthday on July the 30th.
