WPHCCC 9/126(cc) def Barbarians 104 ( R Love 4/22 J Woolnough 2/6 T Hutchinson 2/24)
Game 5 and the team now realised that it needed a change in approach. They developed a 3 point plan:
1. Win the toss and bat first, 2. Bat steadily for all 50 overs and 3. Bowlers to perform even better than
in the previous games. So to the toss, WPHC called correctly and chose to bat first – part one of the
plan completed. Each batsman went out to the middle and played with more concentration and better technique than on the previous days. Whist no individual batsmen made big runs, each player contributed to allow the team to reach 126/9 – part 2 complete. Now to part 3 – could the bowlers bowl better than on previous days? Sensational opening bowling by James W and 2 wickets down without a run on the board, enter Rowan (4/22) and soon the Barbarians were 7 down for just 35. Some more steady bowling and the game should be in the bag. But the Barbarians number 6 had different ideas, dropped without scoring,
he accumulated runs slowly before an aggressive onslaught and he had reached his half century and the Barbarians needed just 30 runs with 3 wickets remaining. Then a sensational run-out by Thomas followed by two quick wickets from the WPHC quicks (Todd and James R) and WPHC had won its first game.
Armidale 6/117(cc) (T Hutchinson 2/16) def WPHCCC 41
On to the final game and the less said about this match the better. WPHC never got going with either bat or ball as the team was comprehensively beaten. The only sparkle coming from Shaun (U12 Blue) who top scored with 18 against much older opposition.
