Évora - the authentic southern portal and heart of Alentejo
Even if it is hard to get an over- view of this agricultural area as a result of its expansiveness, it is possible to travel around it easily from the regional capital of Évora. This highly charming town is a jewel in every respect: with a startling array of good hotels and an even more impressive selection of culi- nary highlights. In terms of its res- taurant scene, the city is one of the most attractive in southern Iberia. Évora represents robust, genuine enjoyment — it might not be the place to go for  ne dining with an international focus. But the chefs of the town know how to prepare the top-class products from the region, like Iberico meat, lamb, kid goat, fresh herbs and  sh from the coast, perfectly and, above all, in an unadulterated way. And it goes without saying that restau- rants such as Dom Joaquim, Lura de Janeiro or Café Alentego are replete with good Alentejo wines at truly affordable prices. Many Lisbon foodies organise regular gourmet trips to this beautiful old city, which is dotted with historic buildings. Outside Portugal, on the other hand, Évora is still not really seen as a key tourist destination, and falls under the radar of the large tour operators, which is an additional plus. Tourists are pre- dominantly selective, and most lose themselves wandering around the many small alleyways of the old town. Travellers seeking culture and wine lovers are generally left amongst themselves, creating a relaxed atmosphere in the city‘s bars and restaurants.
