On the vineyard-covered slopes of the Ahr, between Walporzheim, Mayschoß and Der- nau everything revolves around viticulture. Wine seems to be connected with everything and everyone. Time and again we encounter a list of names, families and institutions, which are connected with the highest-quality wine.
The small wine-growing community of May- schoss only has 900 inhabitants. And here ever- yone is involved in the wine in some way. The vi- neyards are located in the valley along the river Ahr, starting, as it were, from the living room and rising steeply up towards the blue sky. In the heart of Mayschoss lies the Mayschoß-Altenahr Wine- growers Association, which was founded in 1868 by Nicolaus Näkel. WG Mayschoß is said to be the oldest cooperative in the world. A few generations later, the founding father, Näkel, moved with his family from Mayschoss to Dernau and founded the Meyer-Näkel Estate with the Meyer family.
The very early establishment of the winegro- wers‘ cooperative in Mayschoss was probably brought about by the hardship of the people. The steep and rocky slopes of the Ahrberg mountains allowed for no other agricultural use than viti- culture. The small and barren parcels, low yields
