Zoysia grass is extremely drought tolerant. Although it does
turn straw colored under severe drought conditions, it has
the capacity to respond to subsequent irrigation or rainfall.
The leaf blades of Zoysia grass are among the first to roll
under drought conditions, thus it tends to conserve moisture
more effectively than other species. Zoysia grass also has a
deep root system allowing it to more effectively extract
water from greater soil depths. Zoysia grass is among the
most wear tolerant turf grasses.
Watering:
With your newly installed Zoysia lawn, watering and keeping
the grass wet and the top layer of soil wet to establish the
initial root growth is critical. Water two times a day, once
in am and once in pm, for 10 minutes to keep sufficiently
wet for the first two weeks. The grass is starting to put out
roots at this stage, so begin to water once a day in the
morning for third week. If temperatures are over 85 degrees
or it is very windy, increase on these days to 2x a day. In
week four, please water every two to three days for 10
minutes in the am to reduce evaporation. After the first
month, you can water the grass 1’ deep weekly. If you have
a rain gauge, water 1”- 1 ¼” of water in your rain gauge. This
will percolate to a depth of 4 -5” and will encourage the
development of deep roots and your grass will be more
drought tolerant.
Zoysia grass grows from early spring through late fall when
moisture and nutrient requirements are met. Although
