Mixed Media Layering
Explore this exciting technique with help from Lynette Jasper
Layering is one of the simplest techniques in mixed media, yet it is also one of the most effective. By adding papers to a base
then adding more and more embellishments on top of each other to create dimension, you can achieve a unique project that packs a punch without being overly complicated. Plus, it’s a
great way to make the most of your supplies – there are no rules in this craft. “I have been known to get out a hacksaw to cut a resin frame in the past, because half of it would have been hidden under my composition. Being savvy with your stash really helps make it go further!” says Lynette.

SKILL LEVEL
2Layer two resin frames and a resin cherub. Stick together using gel medium. Add this to the canvas. Once dry and cracks have appeared, coat the whole canvas with black gesso.Ripupchipboardsandstick themunder the frames with gel medium.
3Start adding the MDF pieces, metal leaves and flowers, pine cones and cabochons to your project using gel medium. Cover any gaps by mixing Gritty topping with gel medium and applying over the surface using a brush. 4Once dry, coat the embellishments in black
gesso to match the background. When the black gesso is dry, dry brush white gesso over the top of all the raised areas on the canvas. 5Start adding some coloured
embellishments and sequins onto the canvas using gel medium. Once the flowers and sequins are stuck firmly on, dry brush over them with white gesso to provide a gritty edge.
