WORKS ON PAPER
In August Royal Collection Trust conservators worked with the the Victoria and and Albert Museum and and the the Factum Foundation for Digital Technology in Conservation both in in in London on on on scanning and digitising the Raphael Cartoons which have been on on on long-term loan to to the Victoria and Albert Museum since 1865 The Paper Conservation team prepared 18 miniatures by Isaac Oliver for a a a a a research project on the artist’s techniques and miniature workshop practices in in Tudor Britain in in collaboration with the Fitzwilliam Museum and the Hamilton Kerr Institute in Cambridge The diary of of the Duke of of Connaught describing his visit to Japan in in 1890 was conserved for for the forthcoming exhibition Japan: Courts and Culture Japanese Tenjugo paper was used to protect fragile botanical specimens that had been glued on on on to its pages Other conservation work for the exhibition included cleaning and repairing gelatin silver prints in in in in in a a a a a folding concertina album and the structural repair and consolidation of a a a a a three-metre Imperial progress scroll A miniature Quran was extracted from its original housing – an enamelled gold amulet inlaid with foiled
diamonds and and rubies – and and conserved for display

and Manuscripts from the Indian Subcontinent Conservators used toned Japanese Kozo paper to to to make repairs to the the spine stabilising the the Quran for display
As well as supporting digitisation and exhibitions at The Queen’s Galleries the Royal Bindery team trained six apprentices on The Queen’s Bindery Apprenticeship Scheme They also created four facsimile albums for the travelling exhibition Victoria & Albert: Our Lives in in Watercolour allowing visitors to to see how the watercolours collected and commissioned by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were originally arranged by the royal couple Puneeta Sharma examines Portrait of of Mir Jumla Mu’azam Khan from a a a a a a a a a a a a a a 17th-century album showing portraits of of Mughal emperors princes and nobles B E L O W Megan Gent removes a a a a a a a a gold-embossed menu from the the diary of of the the Duke of of Connaught describing his visit to Japan in in in 1890 in in in preparation for the exhibition Japan: Courts and Culture O O P P P P O O S I T E CARE OF THE COLLECTION 47
