I grew up hunting with my dad in northern Wisconsin, wearing
his hand-me-downs and layers I already owned. This consisted of
lots of flannel, plenty of cotton, and army surplus wool layers. I
didn’t know at the time how much the cotton layers were pre-
venting me from staying warm. I also didn’t fully appreciate how
much better fitting outer layers would have helped either. The
problem being that I started out wearing too many of the wrong
10% OFF type of layers and working too hard because of the ill-fitting lay-
ers. I got cold because I worked up a sweat and then tried to stay

WELLNESS Always dress for your activity level. If you are comfortable for
Wednesdays the first 5-10 minutes, you are overdressed. You should be a little
chilly until your body warms up with your activity. Ideally, you
shouldn’t have to shed layers. You should add layers when you stop
to take a break in order to stay warm. Staying warm is infinitely
easier to do than getting warm again after getting chilled.
Cotton belongs in a category all by itself. One of the unique char-
acteristics of cotton is that when damp or wet it actively pulls heat
away from your body. During summer here in Southern Oregon,
that property is ideal. Over the winter that property can kill you!

like they should. All that extra fabric also leads to excess weight
that you lug around, thus causing excess sweating. In the case of
