The MAGEC rods are an alternative to the traditional growing
rods, and eliminate the need for repeated lengthening surgeries.
This results in significant safety, and emotional and physical
benefits for the child and their family. Patients will also be able
to get back to their activities of daily living sooner with this
surgical option.
Our Philadelphia hospital was the first to use the MAGEC
system in the United States after the FDA granted clearance.
Scott Luhmann, M.D., chief of staff of Shriners Hospitals for
Children — St. Louis, was the first in the St. Louis region to
offer this procedure.
“The results of the procedures using the MAGEC System are
significant health, psychological and socioeconomic benefits for
the patients and their families,” said Dr. Luhmann. “Patients can
ride here in the car and lie on their tummies for five minutes,
and then be on their way. This changes the paradigm of how
we care for and treat these children. When you look at the
significant positive impact it has on the family and child, it’s
easy to see why this is important and incredible technology.”
