hen you want a truly special
wine tasting experience in the
Applegate Valley AVA, I highly rec-
Wommend you make reservations at
Cowhorn Biodynamic Vineyard and Garden.
Cowhorn is open to the public by reservation only.
You can book and prepay for an hour-long tasting of
their signature flight of four core offerings includ-
ing Spiral, Grenache, Syrah, and Deuce. Pairings
of flights with wood-fired pizza, featuring locally
sourced organic ingredients, are available Friday
through Sunday while ingredients last.
The 117-acre property is a certified biody-
namic polyculture property with the first tasting
room in the world to receive the Living Building
Certification. The vineyard features 25 planted
acres of estate-grown grapes producing Rhone
Style wines. Primarily Syrah and Grenache for red
wine, although you’ll find some Tempranillo, too.
The white varietals include Viognier, Marsanne,
and Roussanne. In addition to the vineyards, you’ll
find lavender, asparagus, and hazelnut trees inocu-
lated with the Périgord black truffle growing in this
micro-climate. The property is incredibly beautiful,
exuding magical and inviting energy.
I had the extreme pleasure and privilege of a pri-
vate tour with co-owners Mini Banks and her hus-
band Dillon Byers. Mini’s enthusiasm for the wine
business is contagious. A native of Santa Barbara,
she grew up in the wine business; her family has
invested in some of California’s landmark wineries
and she began exploring the business when she was
only nine.
