THE PROVENANCE…
This neoclassical brick building, with a rusticated limestone base and a trio of carved keystones was designed by
renowned architect, Howard Van Doren Shaw and completed in 1923. It is quite different in spirit from the Tudor-
Gothic previous buildings by Shaw. The large apartments were originally five bedrooms and had separate service
wings and impressive galleries. Built as a cooperative arranged to meet owners’ wishes, the building immediately
became one of the city’s most prestigious addresses. The Economist listed the owners before the building was even
completed and described them as millionaires. Two of its more modestly endowed owners were Shaw himself and
Chicago Tribune cartoonist John T. McCutcheon. Other owners included Art Institute benefactor Kate Buckingham
who installed in her apartment portions of her family’s Prairie Avenue home, and two Art Institute presidents, Charles
Hutchinson and Chauncey McCormick, besides a number of prominent bankers and attorneys. Occupying a very
large plot of land, the building had room left for landscaping a parklike area and, some decades later, construction of
handsomely designed garages.

2450 North Lakeview remains today a home to many high profile and prominent Chicagoans who wish to maintain a
low-key lifestyle in an intimate, secure, service oriented building to which they can retreat, relax and entertain family
and friends while maintaining their privacy.
THE VISION…
The current Owners were delighted to be able to acquire this particular floor in the building because it afforded them a
single family home feeling, with lovely views in all directions of trees and greenery and the privacy and security they
desired. They had previously lived very nearby in a single family home and when they were ready to move their
young family to a more intimate and secure environment, their only choice was 2450 North Lakeview.
As most Owners do, they made changes to make it their home and the most notable change is the addition of a lovely
Private Balcony at the west side of the residence overlooking the expansive lawn and gardens. They created a
Garden Room from one of the Bedrooms in which French doors lead from an idyllic year round room to the
Balcony, which has brought them a great deal of pleasure throughout the years.
The family collaborated with prominent architect Marvin Herman and Eva Quateman Interiors, a renowned and very
well-respected Chicago interior designer, in order to create a livable space perfect for raising a family and entertaining
both formally and informally.
THE LOBBY…
The entrance to the Lobby is conveniently located just across the street from the park. The 24-hour doorman greets
you and announces your guests. When returning from a trip or shopping, the doorman will gladly take your luggage
and packages and have them sent to your floor. The service in this building is simply unsurpassed.
Beautiful double glass doors lead from the Outer Lobby in to the Inner Lobby (providing additional security) where
you and your guests are accompanied in the elevator to your Private Outer Foyer.
