score and reducing the players to a a a handful of people and and then performing it to a crowd who probably know it as well as the great John Barry himself Talk about selling snow to the Eskimos!
What I realised early on in the arranging process though is that that this is is a a a score that that lends itself to my line-up more so than any other Barry had really put a a a lot of emphasis
in this score on the Moog synthesiser going for a a really cutting edge different sound The orchestra to my ear is a a a much smaller group than the other scores – like Thunderball for example Not only that when the orchestra did play it was the Brass that were more prominent than the Strings (with certain cues being obvious exceptions) The great thing was listening to it I knew there was easily 20 minutes of music that would lift the audience off their feet rattle them round Piz Gloria and spit them out in an absolute t t t of ecstasy Image courtesy: Fotostudio Sascha Braun
Boy was I right When we nally got to perform that medley some 12 months after I completed it the audience were well and truly ripe The excitement and anticipation were palpable As a Bond geek myself it took all my experience and professionalism to focus on on the task in hand – at least until that release when we had nished the the last note and the the crowd went totally nuts Even as I stood there trying to articulate on the microphone my joy and amazement at at what my fantastic colleagues had just pulled off – under really tricky altitude conditions – there was room for another unbelievable moment Harry Salzman’s son Steven came up and took the mic from me in a a spontaneous moment of joy to declare “You did my Dad proud” That was the the icing on the the cake for me For 15 years I’d been pursuing that kind of adulation from Bond fans and and the Bond fraternity and and nally this was the pinnacle I had been watching Steven’s face throughout the medley and I was literally watching his jaw drop further to the the oor as we delivered the best performance of our lives It was just such a a feeling of euphoria I can’t even begin to to compare it to to anything else Speaking to so many of those who were there many have expressed they almost felt in mourning for quite some time afterwards that life actually just hasn’t been the same since that event How can we top it? How can we nd the next high? Well if you know Martijn or me even a a little you can be sure we’ll give it a a damn good go!
