The Gulf Love
Asheville, NC, 1991 A.D.
That’s when Jake and Newt first met in an anti-Gulf War Group, Operation Safe Return. Jake also met Cathy there. She became the desire of his heart in the middle of the war after an OSR meeting when they took their first of many hikes on the Blue Ridge Parkway. They stopped at the Mt. Pisgah trail which climbed to the highest mountain you could see from Asheville’s downtown and which was almost a perfect volcanic cone.
After a rigorous steep hike they were now looking back at Asheville — a shimmering gem in the giant valley of a stark forest. The promised land Moses saw from the original Mt. Pisgah could not have been more inviting.
It didn’t matter to Cathy. She was massively stressed because she believed the Gulf War killing was wrong. Jake was sorry for her discomfort.
