1991 A.D. In Western North Carolina’s spring, rain dances down mountain creeks into perfect mirrors of quiet pools. Nature can feel so dynamic that reinvigoration is almost impossible to resist. Even would-be suicides can be dragged from their quest for the quiet rest of death back to tumultuous, dubious living. The sheer life force of millions of species of plants and animals surging back to peak vitality jerks them back from the abyss.
Everything that people did in Asheville was dignified by its magnificent surroundings. Every act was performed in a place where people from all over the world paid top dollar to get to be, even for a little while.
The May Day of the Gulf War Celebrate America rally was another beauty. It was held in Asheville’s chic stone and glass Civic Center and was sponsored by Asheville’s University, daily paper and the two most popular radio stations. Not to mention President George H.W. Bush.
