apart, as prescribed by picketing law. They did. Most had signs that read: “Fifteen billion for the war, not a penny for the poor.” Cathy wore a Spanish lace, black veil and gown to mourn the occasion, and carried a sign that read: “Massacre is not something to celebrate.”
No one was hurt and most discussion between picketers and celebrators was respectful. Jake’s fears proved false.
OSR’s Zelda McClanahan even went into the Civic Center with her protest sign, walked from the front with its giant American flag made out of red, white and blue balloons, through another balloon triumphal arch, and all the hundred-yard way to the back of the packed room. She drew the occasional hiss and boo but was not significantly harassed.
Jake decided to cover the happening for The Blue Ridge Speedster. He watched some of the OSR march, and then entered the Center to tape record the program. Added to his usual white shirt and khaki pants were a navy- blue blazer and a flat brown tie. It was the perfect patriot disguise.
He bowed his head with about eight thousand others as the local Air Force Chaplain kicked off the ceremony saying:
Thank God for allowing us to accomplish Desert Storm with so few casualties, producing a tremendous boost to our national morale. We pray that our spirituality will be renewed on a national scale, and that we will proceed on the rediscovered need for a strong military that need not be hawkish.
