see a clothesline which engulfed him in a white, king-size sheet. He tried to jerk his way out but that tore down the entire line, which sent Newt tumbling into a nearby ditch. With all the soft, dry clothes, he felt safe and warm and decided to sleep.
The fearful single lady who owned the house heard the racket and saw Newt dancing in the bed sheet as though some kind of ghostly rapist. She called the police. Newt took in stride his arrest for trespass, and spent the night in jail with other trespassers — mostly homeless people looking for a place to sleep. The next morning amused authorities released him — court date in a month.
Newt remained unfazed through it all. In fact, he felt swashbuckling. The next day he called Carol. She said she now had an ex-ex, that is, she had reconciled with her ex- husband.
The court fined Newt $3,000, which was just the amount of money he hoped would get him through the winter when there was little construction work. He was facing winter, on a drunk tear, and depressed. He couldn’t even pay his $100 boarding house rent.
Greta was monitoring Newt to ascertain just when he’d had enough comeuppance. She concluded getting thrown out of a lousy boarding house was absolute zero. The only thing below that was the street or death. So she and her roommate Linda invited Newt to move into their spare bedroom. Newt accepted with all the emotion of a zombie.
It was a cozy home with lots of joy. Newt lay around for several weeks, not speaking. The ladies indulged him as if his setback were nothing out of the ordinary.
Soon he began taking pride in washing dishes. One day
