Notable also are interesting exceptions. One example is SGC's distinctive set of
par 3s offering a diversity of aesthetic beauty and personal challenge. From the
back tees SGC offers something Pine Valley GC, Merion East, Cypress Point and
Sam Whiting's other masterpiece Olympic Lake cannot match. Three par 3's over
200 yards.
In 1920 Dr. Alister McKenzie published his “Design Codes” in Golf Architecture
Magazine. These guidelines, once referred to as “the Codes” remain recommended
reading for all involved in the art form known as golf course design. In my next
article I will share the good doctor’s codes hopefully launching a spirited discussion
in the think tank as to how SGC matches up.
I have a greater respect for Mr. Whiting every time I play SGC. I wish Sam could
hear me say how much I want to play it again, and again.
