Sustainable Designs and Operations at SCTC
Inaugurated in 2014, the SCTC consolidated many of our key operations such as the main Telebet Centre, Broadcasting studios, Production o ce, IT Department o ces, and The Hong Kong Jockey Club College for sta training.
The building was designed considering both Hong Kong BEAM and U.S. LEED standards, with an emphasis on achieving realistic energy, water and waste reductions. We utilised computer simulations to optimise energy performance, while a Life Cycle Cost and Life Cycle Analysis was undertaken to assess the long term development and management of the building. As a result, SCTC was awarded a nal Gold rating under the Hong Kong Green Building Council’s BEAM Plus V1.1 for new buildings.
Passive Design to Improve Thermal Comfort
and Outdoor Experience
Considering building design and orientation can help reduce the energy needs of the building; at SCTC we chose a high performance building envelope to reduce thermal and solar loads on occupied spaces whilst maintaining views. These passive design techniques helped us improve overall system e ciency and promote energy savings. For example the façade and horizontal ns were designed to reduce solar gain by up to 32%. The rooftop garden and green faces also help lower the surface temperature of the building thereby decreasing cooling needs.
The SCTC was also oriented to take full advantage of environmental factors for natural light and self-shading. We chose a side core for our o ces on the North-North-West façade rather than a centre core or dual core. This reduced solar gain in internal spaces.
The ample green spaces around the building improve the ambience of the surrounding area, while features such as a rooftop garden, organic green wall and sunken courtyard provide a comfortable, collaborative space for social gatherings, and corporate events for employees and guests.
