Simulation Training
Venues
1. Magee-Womens Hospital
a. Resident Lounge has all of the laparoscopic skills training equipment and a box of procedure skills simulation equipment
b. Additional simulation equipment is stored in Dr. Gosman’s office for scheduled sessions and use on request.
c. Obstetric Crisis Team Training Course is conducted on-site at Magee. This course uses full scale human simulation and video-
debriefing to practice multi-disciplinary teamwork for teams that care for OB patients.
2. Peter M. Winter Institute for Simulation Education and Research (WISER) is located 2 blocks from Magee. www.wiser.pitt.edu. This
simulation center is an internationally-known free-standing institute.
Skills and Models
1. Laparoscopy box trainers with video set-up for laparoscopic dexterity
2. Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery: www. Flsprogram.org. Skills training equipment and online access for cognitive learning is
available for all residents. R3’s are given the opportunity to achieve certification. This is a nationally-recognized program that is currently
required for general surgery board certification.
3. Pelvic exam: used for R1 orientation for bimanual and speculum exam skills (METI Pelvic Exam Sim)
4. Suture and knot-tying boards
5. Vaginal delivery, shoulder dystocia, and operative vaginal delivery: Prompt Birth Simulator, bony pelves with baby, plastic pelvic models
with baby
6. Circumcision: baby carrot in a finger of a glove
7. OB Laceration: towel models developed at UAB
8. LEEP and Laser: meat and hot-dogs anchored in a tube to simulate constraints of the vaginal wall
9. Laparotomy opening and closure: Styrofoam pumpkin with fabric layers of the abdomen
10. Endometrial procedures: papaya model
11. Hysteroscopy: hysteroscope and video set-up with plastic uterine models (Limbs and Things and Conceptus) and various fruit/vegetables
12. Amniocentesis: grapes suspended in double strength jello (UAB model)
13. Patient Communication: R1’s do a session with simulated patients counseling about level-appropriate issues. R4’s do a session with
simulated patients on disclosing errors. All scenarios were developed from real cases at Magee. Sessions are facilitated by a multi-
disciplinary group of faculty from across the University and city.
14. Obstetric crisis response: full scale human simulation using SimMan or Noelle manikins. Participants in the course include ob/gyn,
anesthesia, and ob nursing. This course takes place at Magee every other month and on the Labor Suite every other month.
