Please note that the story is not meant as a criticism of people who have wealth or those who desire to improve their social conditions, but it does serve as a warning about greed and its consequences. Pahom’s problem was not that he wanted to better himself or his family. His problem was the greed hidden in his heart.
So, how can we gauge accurately whether we have greed within our hearts? Answering the following questions may help:
1. Am I willing to share what I have just purchased (or thinking about purchasing)?
2. What happens if my new possession breaks? How will I feel?
3. What time commitment is needed to manage the item purchased? Will it consume my essential asset of time?
Let’s be honest with ourselves about whether there are still elements of greed in our hearts. If there is, we can get rid of it by being generous. Positive responses to the above questions will result in a purchase that is shared easily with others, and we will experience joy in the journey of generosity.
