GENEROSITY: THE RADICAL CONCEPT | Chapter 11
We have looked carefully at how to develop a spending plan, and now we need to think about extending the plan beyond just money. The Ancient Egyptians believed in taking possessions into the afterlife, items such as jewellery, furniture and other treasures. What happened to their possessions? They rotted along with the people. That’s why we need to look at generosity from a different aspect. The focus is not on us, but others – how we can bless others with whatever we have, be it money, time or a kind word. Since we’re aiming to cultivate generous hearts, we should plan to be generous in other areas of our lives. At the end of the day, the immaterial ways of being generous far outweigh generosity with money because they build and improve our relationships, which are our greatest treasure.
We’ve looked at many principles about money, but there’s only one rule for generosity, and that is: there are no rules! We each have the power within us to change our perspective and improve in this area of generosity. It’s not every day that a person gives just to give and expects nothing in return. Actually, it is a radical idea. Let us consider it as part of the transformation in our lives, for it not only transforms us as individuals, but it also transforms the world around us.
