Strategy to learn new words:
● Using the right brain for visualization
Most of the time, Thai students are likely to translate and memorize things since they are
taught to use a lot of left brain in logic, analysis and mathematics. But if they use the right brain
more, it will help them to remember things better because it deals with imagination and creativity.
Therefore, when they visualize things or feel something, it will stick into their mind better and they
tend to remember words longer.
Some good tools include using pictures to show the positions of prepositions instead of
the meaning, using mind maps to organize information, or using word family to describe groups
of words that share the common meaning or letters. For example, the root word ‘two’ contains
the letter ‘tw-’, which can be grouped according to the word family as follows;
- Twist - Twins - Twice
- Twelve - Twenty - Tweezers
- Twilight - Between
● Dissecting the word
As previously mentioned, when a new word is seen, the meaning of the word can be
interpreted by breaking down the word components into prefix, root or suffix of the word.
● Using a good dictionary
Resource to help understand a word is by using a good English dictionary, for example
Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary. The dictionary can help learners to know the meanings of
the word, type of the word and how to use it in a sentence structure including the phonetic guide
of the word pronunciation. Thesaurus is another useful resource for finding synonyms (words that
have the same meaning) and sometimes antonyms (words that have the opposite meaning), this
can be used to help expand the variety of word power and avoid repetition in word use when
writing or speaking. Other resources for the pharmacy profession include medical dictionaries,
