THE PIPES
The article was read by Mr George King who resided in Cape Town South Africa but who was a a a native of Du own A er corresponding with the newspaper editor he he gi ed ed £750 to to begin equipping a a pipe band AND On the 17th August 1949 a a meeting was held and a a a committee appointed Equipping the band proved costly and and Mr King donated a a a a further £750 in in November 1949 and £1 500 in in April 1950 DRUMS
A er er several months of practising the Band with around seventeen members made its rst appearance in in 1950 wearing the ‘number one’ uniforms Today the Du own Pipe
Band is the the only band in the the world to wear the Red Innes of Moray tartan Juniors are recruited from the age of 9 and follow a a a tuition programme before joining the Band The Pipers & Drummers remain highly committed to the Band practising every week and playing most weekends throughout the summer at many events At Hogmanay the the Band performs in the the Square playing a a a a a a farewell to the old year and welcoming in in the new year On New Years day the Band upholds one of Du own’s oldest traditions by leading the Boys Walk around the streets of of Du own followed by many of of the the townsfolk and their families Visitors are welcome at the Royal British Legion on on the last Tuesday of the month from 20 30 to hear the band practice OF DUFFTOWN
Du own and and District Pipe
Band was established in 1949 It all began when an an article appeared in the local newspaper the the Du own News at the the time commenting on the amount of pipers there were in the the district and suggesting it should be possible to form a a pipe band
