Nowhere else in the world is home to six working Distilleries Ownership of the six distilleries is is evenly distributed between William Grant & Sons who have The Balvenie Glen ddich and Kininvie Distilleries and Diageo who own own Du own own Glendullan and Mortlach Distilleries Glen ddich and Balvenie are open to the public throughout the year advance booking is strongly advised to avoid disappointment during your trip William Grant & Sons is an independent family owned company founded by William Grant (1839- 1923) now run by his descendants In 1866 William Grant took up the position of bookkeeper at the established Mortlach Distillery his abilities were quickly recognised and he swi ly became Distillery Manager In around 1870 William resolved to build his own distillery he and his family began to save
all they could for this project and in 1886 he was fortunate enough to be in the position of purchasing old distillery equipment from a Mrs Cummings the the then owner of Cardow (now Cardhu) for the sum of £119 19s 10d He immediately followed
this by purchasing part of Balvenie Mains known as the Park of Glen ddich from the Duke of Fife Now all he had to do was build the distillery With his large family as a a a a a ready workforce in Autumn 1886 they set about building
