Stories of Human Rights
“What did Miguel do? Why” (ran to Señora Ortega to nd out about Abuelita)
“Look at the verb ran. Is it in the pa simple tense, or is it in the pa per- fect tense? How do you know?” (pa simple; the action happened in the pa . ran is the pa simple of the base verb run. It does not use the pa perfect helping
verb had.)
• Consider challenging udents to replace pa simple run with pa perfect had run. Invite them to discuss in pairs how the meaning of the sentence changes, and whether it ill makes sense.
• Invite udents to act out the roles of Miguel and Senora Ortega in this chunk.
• Display and read aloud the following chunk: and she con rmed
• Place your nger on she and invite udents to do the same.
• Ask:
“Who is this chunk about? Who is she in this chunk? What, in the text, makes you think so?” (Señora Ortega; she is who Miguel ran to.)
“What did Señora Ortega do? (con rmed)
• Place your nger on con rmed and invite udents to do the same.
“When did the action in this chunk happen? What, in the chunk, makes you think so?” (In the pa , because con rmed is the pa tense of con rm.)
• Consider challenging udents to replace pa simple con rmed with pa perfect had con rmed. Invite them to discuss in pairs how the meaning of the sentence changes, and whether it ill makes sense.
• Invite udents to act out the roles of Miguel and Senora Ortega in the r two chunks.
• Display and read aloud the following chunk: that she had seen Abuelita
• Ask:
“Who is this chunk about? Who is she in this chunk? What, in the text, makes you think so?” ( ill Señora Ortega because she is who Miguel ran to.)
“What had Señora Ortega done in this chunk?” (She had seen Abuelita.) “Place your nger on had seen. What verb tense is this?” (pa perfect)
“What does this tell us about when Señora Ortega had seen Abuelita?” (It tells us that she had seen Abuelita for a moment in the house before she came outside and con rmed that she had seen her.)
• Ask, then invite udents to write the formula on their note-catcher:
“What is the formula for the pa perfect verb tense?” (pa perfect = had + pa participle)
