• Throughout this close read, udents will work in pairs to discuss answers to the que ions you ask. Use di erent rategies to have them respond, such as cold calling, selecting volunteers, or responding chorally as a group.
• Refer to the Close Reading Note-catcher: Article 17 (example, for teacher reference) for answers to the que ions.
• Read the whole article aloud as udents read along silently in their heads.
• Invite udents to turn and talk with their partner and then cold call udents to share out:
“What is this article about?” (It’s about the right to own property.)
• Point out the use of the word he rather than she and remind udents that on o cial documents like this, he is often used to mean “a person.” So, although it says he, it is referring to all people.
• Ask Que ion 1. Give udents 3 minutes to work in pairs to nd the gi of Article 17 and to record it on their note- catcher.
• Cold call udents to share the gi with the whole group.
• Focus udents on Part 1 of the article. Invite them to follow along, reading silently in their heads as you read it aloud.
• Invite udents to circle unfamiliar vocabulary and use the rategies recorded on the Close Readers Do These Things anchor chart to nd the meaning of the words they don’t know.
• Ensure udents under and that in this context property means things that belong to us.
• Focus udents on the phrase “as well as in association with.” Invite them to place their nger on the word association.
