hold the hitch in place. If that object were to disappear
       suddenly, the hitch would unravel.
          Bend. Bends are the family of knots used to join
       two rope ends to each other. Some bends historically
       were differentiated from knots because removing one
       rope or the other would unravel the bend. But some
       joining knots would remain partially intact if one rope
       or the other were removed. These distinctions are
       virtually irrelevant to a rock climber. Bend and joining
       knot can be used interchangeably to signify a gesture
       of the rope that joins two rope ends.
































       After reading this text you should be able to identify all
       the knots pictured here: figure 8 follow through, double
       bowline with Yosemite finish, BHK, bowline, bowline with
       a bight, figure 8 with a bight, and overhand with a bight.
