in Aceh. The Javanese converted to
Islam voluntarily without coercion after
having seen the pious proponents of
Islamic propagation who had arrived
from distant lands. These proponents
were not merchants or general laymen,
but high-ranking nobles. Their privileged
positions enabled the common people
to look up to them and to see them as
examples. Thus, the miracles enacted by
the proponents of Islam as recorded in
traditional historiographic works attracted
people to Islam, made them convert to
Islam, and eventually to follow varieties
of Islamic teachings.
