LETTERS of Recommendation
You will be asking two teachers for letters of recommendation. These letters are sent out to colleges by your counselor along with other information like your transcripts, resume and counselor recommendation. Recommendation letters are used by the admission committee to get an idea of who you are as a student beyond grades and test scores. They want to know you have the study habits, work ethic and motivation to succeed in a college course. Your ability to manage time, study effectively, participate in class discussions and respect deadlines are important indicators of your future adjustment to college.
Your teachers are given directions on what to include in your letter and tips on how to write them. In picking your teachers to write on your behalf you should think of those that you relate well with, and those that know your strengths. You should have made good grades in their classes and feel confident that they have a positive impression of your abilities and potential. Your counselor will also write a letter for you that acts as a summary or highlight of your best points and pulls your application together for the admission committee. Follow the steps listed below when obtaining letters of recommendation:
1. Choose your teacher carefully.
2. Request the recommendation letter politely.
3. Place each teacher’s name in Naviance.
4. Check in periodically to see if your letter is ready.
5. Inform the teacher when you get your admissions.
THE COLLEGE Essay
Your English teacher will work with you in class on the college essay. At least one essay will be developed and graded to help you through the process. Other essays with specific topics may be part of a college application. You must be sure that you write all essays requested along with supplements. If the college has an optional essay, you should show your interest by completing it. Questions may change yearly.
