Factors to Consider When Choosing a College
You are about to take off on a journey toward one of the most important and exciting decisions of your life – selecting a college. The first step in finding a college that “fits” you is to do a little soul searching. You need to consider both what you want to study and what your living conditions will be for the next four years. The factors below, when dealt with honestly, will help you get started.
Academic Match
• How do you fit into the academic demands of the college?
• What balance do you want between academics and outside interests and activities?
College Major
• Does the college have majors related to your career interest?
• Is there enough diversity in the majors offered?
• Are the majority of the classes online or can you attend class?
Size of Classes
• What type of learner are you?
• Do you learn best in small or large classes?
• Do you like the opportunity to ask questions and discuss topics? • Would you like internships?
College Setting
• Youarefromalargeurbansetting;thus,howdoyouthinkyouwilladjusttoasmall-town,ruralsetting? • Do you enjoy city life?
• How close to a city would you like to be?
Geographic Location
• Can you handle a cold climate?
• How will the travel distance from home impact you?
Life on Campus
• Do you want opportunities to pledge into Greek life (fraternities and sororities)?
• Are large sporting events, religious groups, specific clubs and/or intramural sports important to you? • Will you play a sport?
• What division does the college play in?
Need for Support
• Does the college offer the support services you will need to be successful?
• Is there a program that helps you get adjusted, supplies tutors or time management workshops? • Are there accommodations like extended time or reduced load?
Costs and Available Aid
• Do you have Florida Prepaid?
• Will you qualify for Bright Futures?
• Will you need aid from the college’s financial services?
Parents’ Opinion
• Have you spoken to your parents about important issues like leaving the area, cost and geographical considerations?
