Introduction to Issue
This year’s volume offers its traditional slate of the finest essays in the social sciences written by Gulliver students, as well as essays from Mr. Manuel Santelices’ signature program in International Diplomacy and Legal Studies. Mr. Joshua Messinger, Mr. Juan Lazcano, Ms. Jazmine Vega, and Mr. James Haskett contributed imported titles to the issue. The student editors worked closely with Mr. Santelices and his lead students on research topics related to international politics, making this volume one of the more unique and wide-ranging collection of essays in our now eight years of publication.
The Principles of Social Science has only recently started soliciting essays from underclassmen and underclasswomen. This year, Mr. Salomon Bibas and Ms. Cimmie Owencraft have contributed important titles, written during the freshmen year. Mr. Bibas’ work on Israeli irrigation history illustrates how a small, mostly arid nation can emerge as one of the world’s leaders in irrigation technology. And Ms. Cimmie Owencraft’s thoughtful review of the 1666 London Fire adds to our understanding of the wider social consequences from this urban disaster. Our senior submissions this year both focus on Latin American History. They include Mr. Juan Lazcano’s history of Peru, with a special focus on the politics of Peronism, and Ms. Everest Maya- Tudor’s insightful treatment of the Cuban Crisis. Ms. Tudor emphasizes the diplomatic prowess of John F. Kennedy just as the world faced nuclear Armageddon.
This year’s volume, like almost everything this year, has been different. The collaborative and organizational challenges attendant to life during the pandemic presented delays to our typical completion schedules, but these were treated as minor inconveniences by our student editors, Ms. Isabel Cuellar and Ms. Juliana Vair. Ms. Cuella and Ms. Vair managed through the responsibilities and attention seniors normally pay to college applications, on-going course work,
