The delicious meal of haggis – freshly
cut; thanks, Will – neeps and tatties
followed by tablet was provided
by the refectory staff, led by Head
Chef Neil Ross and the ever-present
Wendy Barber. Lara Hunter-Douglas
gave the Immortal Memory to Rabbie
Burns, which was well delivered and
memorable. She focused on the
importance of not judging Burns for
his complicated relationships with the
opposite sex, but to reflect on the time
that he lived in and the importance of
his works, emphasising how they remain
deeply rooted in Scottish culture.
The meal was closed by Bruno Steel as
he gave thanks to everyone who helped
to make the night so special. The guests
were then invited to the school hall Sellers readying themselves for the Chinese New Year bake sale
for ceilidh dancing. The only negative
feedback was that the night should have P5 Habbies
been longer. The first Burns Supper was
a truly great success and – like Burns To a Monkey
Night itself – the S6s hope that the You are swinging in the trees
tradition will remain at Heriot’s for years happily and free,
to come.

To a Polar Bear
You big, fluffy and lovely beast,
Hunting for food to have a feast.
I am truly sorry for your melting
homes,
Probably making you all alone.
I just want to say,
You have a tough life to get
through,
So I think I should help you.

To a Koala
Please be aware,
The fires will begin to flare.
You don’t want to set fire to your
fluffy hair.
If it will rain, you won’t face pain.
If we stop climate change,
You won’t be in a fire range.
They will fight the big flame.
I’m so sorry for the fires.
