Paul Peter Ewald, FRS (January 23, 1888
in Berlin, Germany – August 22, 1985
in Ithaca, New York) was
a German crystallographer and physicist, a
pioneer of X-ray diffraction methods
The Ewald sphere is a geometric construction used in electron, neutron, and X-
ray crystallography which demonstrates the relationship between:
1. the wavevector of the incident and diffracted x-ray
beams,
2. the diffraction angle for a given reflection,
3. the reciprocal lattice of the crystal
