                 THE EVER YTHING KNOTS BOOK

eye toward the mathematics of which patterns make a symmetrical
result, while others delve into the many objects that can be made
from them. Even more variations come into play when a pattern
other than the over-one-under-one pattern is considered, and more
possibilities still when more than one cord is added in, usually of
                 a different color.

                        ALERT

For many there is a sense of intimidation at the thought of
trying variations of decorative knots. But like regular
knotting—and many other pursuits, for that matter—it is
what you don’t know that seems intimidating. After making
just a little progress, whole worlds of possibilities will seem
                     accessible and enjoyable.

                     Special Concerns
Special knots abound for specialized activities, of which only a
glimmer could be covered in any one book. The fishing knots cov-
ered in Chapter 11 were chosen based on their relevance to other
topics introduced in this book, both in function and structure.
There are numerous publications and Web sites dedicated to fishing
knots. Moreover, specific varieties of fishing styles have many knots
                 continually being developed for them.
Though the Cleat Hitch is useful to a large number of boaters,
there is a wide variety of anchoring hardware for docking, each
with different possible knotting styles. References on boating and
dock lines also include ways to secure dock lines that account
for large tidal ranges, and even storms. You will also find infor-
mation on using dock lines for controlling boat position while
docking and undocking. That is just the subject of docking.
Boating references, especially for sailing, have much to teach
                 about knotting and rope work.
