few others in human history and a beacon of hope for a future that had become suddenly much
brighter.
In 1972, Armstrong visited the town of Langholm, Scotland, the traditional seat of the
Armstrong Clan. He was made the first freeman of the burgh, and happily declared the town his
home. The Justice of the Peace read from an unrepealed, and thankfully unenforced, 400-year-
old law that required him to hang any Armstrong found in the town. My son Sean and I stayed
overnight in Langholm as we began our motorcycle tour of Scotland in 2011. We visited the
Clan Armstrong museum there and I subsequently sent the curator several high-resolution
photos from NASA archives taken of Armstrong during his NASA career. I also submitted two
articles that were latter published in their monthly newsletter.
Although I never actually conversed with Neil Armstrong, I did attend a function at the Kennedy
Space Center Visitor Complex attended by him, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Cooper in the late
1990s or early 2000s.
