Ride was an American astronaut and physicist. She joined NASA in
1978 and became the first American woman in space in 1983. After
flying twice on the Orbiter Challenger, she left NASA in 1987. Many of
the people attending her first launch wore T-shirts bearing the words
"Ride, Sally Ride", lyrics from Wilson Pickett's song "Mustang Sally".
She was the only person to serve on the committees that investigated
both the Challenger and Columbia Space Shuttle disasters.
