9. Elliott Orlando Armstrong
Elliott Orlando was born and raised in Shoreham, VT. In 1838 he married Susannah Cooper in Constable,
Franklin, NY. The first ten years of his married life was spent farming in the Shoreham area, although his third
child, Lucy Ann, was born in the same area where his wife came from – perhaps she went home to be with her
parents when the baby came? About 1850, Elliott and his family also decided to leave Vermont and settled near
his brothers Chester and David in Sandstone, MI. Their last child, Mansell, is believed to have been born in
Sandstone in January 1851 and his name appears in his older brother Dr. David W. Armstrong’s medical account
book for the first time in Parma in August 1852. Interestingly, at the same time his wife’s brother, Orange
Stephens’ (from Vermont?) name also appears for the first and only time. The name of William Cooper, the
second husband (?) of Eleanor Phelps Armstrong, the youngest Armstrong of this generation (see below) also
appears for the first time and is repeated three more times through March 1853. Is it just a coincidence that
Elliot Orlando’s wife’s maiden name is also Cooper, or is there a family relationship of some kind there? Elliot’s
name appears in his older brother’s account book a total of fifteen times through Dec. 1855 where a reference is
made to his son Luman having received some kind of apparently minor medical attention from his Uncle David.
It was also in 1855 that Elliot’s wife Susannah died at the age of 39.
By 1860, Elliot had moved to Windsor Township, Eaton Co., MI, and Luman, Lucy, George and Mansell still
resided with him at home. In 1862, he married Susannah Donnelly, originally of Jefferson, OH. In 1864 Elliot died
and is believed to have been buried in Windsor.
Additional research is required to ascertain the following: In the 1860 Census, Elmira B. Armstrong, the oldest of
Elliott Orlando's children is missing. By that time, she would have been 21 years old, but no record of her
marriage has been found, nor has a record of her death. Did she die in Shoreham, VT as a youngster? Also
missing is Elvira E. Armstrong. In 1860, she would have been 15 years old - did she also die in VT?
The first two references below show the full name of Elliott's oldest son as Luman W. Phelps, not Armstrong as
with Elliot’s other sons and daughters. While his grandmother was a Phelps, nothing in family history has been
found that would explain this inconsistency. In an email shown below, a family researcher 9, CR-7 identifies the
source of this anomaly as an LDS archive record originally submitted by a Phelps ancestor. It is her opinion that
this is simply a transcription error and based on what I have seen, I tend to agree with her. The same last name
of Phelps for Luman appears in only one other reference shown below, which I received from another family
researcher. 9, CR-3 It is my opinion that she picked this up from the same LDS record and copied it into her family
group record. Other references below show Luman’s last name as Armstrong.
