Sometime in about 1838 -1839 the Renfroes moved to Leake County Mississippi where
they purchased a parcel of farm land on which JOHN raised cotton and where they
lived up to and during the Civil War.

John J. Renfroe enlisted in the 33 Mississippi Infantry in April, 1862. Three of his
sons, Frank, Thomas and Abner had earlier joined the 33 rd Mississippi Infantry in
February that same year.
During the war Abner was killed but the other two sons and John J. Renfroe were all
discharged in 1865 and returned home.
From this point on the story the sequence of events of exactly what happened in the
lives of the Renfroe family and what caused “the Renfroe Boys” to become fugitives
from the law is confusing; there are several versions of the story circulating among
members of their surviving family.
The basics of the story are as follows :
John J. Renfroe and his wife, Lydiann decided to move to Texas. They began selling
their farm machinery and property and hid the money they received in a hiding place
under a corner of their smoke house.
