55th Anniversary
In loving Memory Of
Lions Melvin and Billie Chambers
Melvin James Robinson Chambers was an alumnus of the Old L.C. Anderson High School, Huston-Tillotson University, and Southwest Texas State University. He served in the United States Army for two and a half years and upon returning to Austin, he and Billie Nell Atkins were married, a union which lasted 57 years until his death. Together, they had one son: Melvin Earlie Chambers.
Melvin Chambers was a teacher, first at O.L. Price High School and then with the Austin Independent School District. He was the first black president of Austin Teacher Association and National Education Association and was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church, serving as Financial Secretary and then Treasurer until 2002.
Billie Nell Chambers was a graduate from the Old L.C. Anderson High School and earned her Bachelor of Science Degree from Huston-Tillotson College, later earning her M.E. Degree in Guidance from Prairie View A&M University.
Always ready to serve their communities, Melvin Chambers was a Charter Member of the Austin Capital City Lions Club, later serving as District Governor of District 2-S3. He was a lifetime member of both Lions Club International and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated.
Billie Chambers became a member of the Capital City Lioness Club and was a Charter Member of the Capital City Evening Lions Club. She was a life member of the NAACP, Wesley United Methodist Church, and the Alpha Kappa Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated.
Both were true public servants whose tireless efforts and dedication to the community in which they lived improved the lives of so many around them. May they never be forgotten.
