55th Anniversary
In Loving Memory
Lion Matthew Caldwell Charter Member 1924-2018
Matthew Simpson Caldwell, the seventh child of Charles W. Caldwell and Beulah W. Quick, born on May 17, 1924 in Orangeburg, South Carolina, passed away on August 22, 2018 at the age of 94, at his home in Austin, Texas. Before graduating from Howard University, he served in WWII in the Pacific. Matthew came to Austin in 1953 where he remained for the rest of his life.
During his long career in education, he spent twelve years as a teacher and basketball coach at the Texas Blind, Deaf, and Orphan School in Austin, TX. This was followed by 24 years working as teacher, Orientation and Mobility Director, and Administrator at the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired.
Matthew was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, and the Austin Capital City Lions Club. He is survived by his sister Josephine Howard of Georgetown, SC, as well as his former wife, Joyce Caldwell, two children, Phyllis and Matthew, and four grandchildren, Joanna, Meija, Ilori, and Pauline.
Lion Matthew Caldwell served the Austin Capital City Lions Club well, attending meetings, service projects, and other events. He truly embodied the Lions Club motto: “We Serve.”
He will be missed by all who knew him.
