Airspace security issues
UAVs are both an opportunity and a threat. They must encourage us to develop new responses, including joint initiatives between the civil sector and the military. To this end, the French Air Force and Groupe ADP have entered into a partnership to develop a demonstra- tion model for the civil system that is currently being deployed at Paris airports. The aim is to be able to incorporate the civil measures intended to protect airports and aerodromes into air defence in the long term, and also to enable the French Air Force to use these systems within the framework of its missions.
A fruitful collaboration
For nearly six months, the French Air Force and Groupe ADP have made agile and collaborative progress, with the support of the French Agence de l’Innovation de Défense.
• Tests at Air Base 107 in Villacoublay allowed us to prove the quality of the systems and their suitability for military and tactical use.
• A deployment at the Paris Air Show and tests in operational conditions, in the presence of the Prime Minister, the Minister of the Armed Forces, the Minister of Transport and the Minister of Research, were able to demonstrate its the operational effectiveness.
• Part of the security measures for the Bastille Day parade.
• Part of the security measures for the G7 in Biarritz in August 2019.
A promising outlook
These successful operations open up major opportunities for the BASSALT programme in the context of future DPSAs (Special Air Safety Systems).
In addition, the partners are undertaking an ambitious 5-year Research and Development programme with research institutes such as ONERA, Ecole Polytechnique, ENAC, etc. This programme will include technology monitoring with the aim of discovering new sensors and technologies capable of confronting the needs and challenges of the Armed Forces and OVIs.
