Lee Ray Young is STORM Shelter’s newest resident. He is in recovery for opioids and meth, and he is so grateful for the second chance he has received by being in STORM’s program. “The [Becker] house is so positive and joyful, we laugh and have fun. Anytime we see each other struggling we help each other out,” he said.
STORM has been working in unison with the Logan County Drug Court, the Sheriff’s office and Logan Community Services to make this a reality for men in the drug court program. Until April 2019 when STORM opened the Becker House at the STORM Shelter, there were no sober living homes in all of Logan county. Men in this drug court were literally choosing to stay in jail over being released because they knew if they went back to their homes, they would lose their sobriety.
That’s one of the reasons Lee Ray says he’s so grateful to be in the Becker House. He loves the support system of his new-found community, along with his mentors in Jason Reece, a local Guthrie man who spends most of his free time ministering to those in addiction, and Sheriff Devereaux.
“I can’t live in recovery without God. I look back on my past and appreciate the struggle. I wouldn’t be as strong. This is what I want every day, we wake up, drink coffee, fellowship,” he says of his time in the program.
His favorite memory so far is from just a few weeks ago when his family attended church with him to see him get baptized. He said it’s been over two years since they have come to church. On that day, his dad asked Lee Ray to go to the altar with him so he could start a relationship with Jesus, too.
As Lee Ray puts it, “That was the best day I ever had!”
This is why your continued and faithful support and prayers make a STORM! Lives, generations, legacies and eternal destinies are being FOREVER CHANGED because of our friends and partners like you!
