Her Legacy
Betty Elsie Ladd was the 7th child of 15 born to the late FA. and Annie Hilmer Ladd.
She was baptized at the age of 12 at First Baptist Church in Prichard, Alabama under the
leadership of the Late Charlie Henry Peterson. Betty attended Sunday School and other
church services on a regular basis including vacation Bible School. She later taught
Vacation Bible School and sang in the Junior Choir.
Betty completed her formal education in Mobile and Prichard, Alabama. She attended
Chickasaw Terrace Elementary School also Ella Grant High schools included Mobile
County Training School and graduated from Cedar Grove Academy Christian School.
After graduation she attended Bishop State Junior College.
Betty later married Theodore Steele and to this union 4 children were
born. Theodore Jr., Terrance, Harriette (aka) Lisa, and Theron. The
family moved to California where she continued her education. She
attended Los Angeles City College and California State University.
Betty worked for Los Angeles Unified School District for 26 - 1/2
years, McKinley Avenue Elementary, 107th Street Elementary,
and Main Street Elementary school where she remained until she retired in 2007.
Betty loved attending church. She attended Fellowship of Jesus Christ under the
leadership Bishop Clyde Wheat. She later Joined Holy Mission Temple of Faith under
the leadership of the late Suffragan Bishop Joseph Dorsey, where she was a faithful
member and served on the Usher Board , Nurse’s Guild and Missionary Board of
Trustee.
After Bishop Dorsey retired, she joined Miracle Center Apostolic
Community Church under the leadership of Suffragan Bishop
Roy S. Pettit and First Lady Bennie R. Pettit. She taught Sunday school
and was V.P. of Miracle Center Women’s group and served on the
Baptism committee.
Preceded her in death were her husband of 39 years Theodore Steele, Parents FA. and
Annie Hilmer Ladd, Brothers A.C., F.D. Charles Amos, Dwight Samuel, and Charles Ladd.
