As a conclusion of the workshop, Dr. Rico RICHTER and his team from the Hasso
Plattner Institute will showcase the value of 3D point clouds as digital twins of
real-world sceneries. They introduce state-of-the-art analysis and visualization
techniques for dense, large-scale 3D point clouds that are relevant for geospatial
applications in diverse fields such as urban planning, infrastructure monitoring,
building information modeling, or cultural heritage documentation. Through a
mixture of case studies and live demonstrations, this session will focus on the
following topics: (1) Machine learning techniques for automatic classification of 3D
point clouds, (2) change detection for multi-temporal scans, (3) virtual reality for 3D
point clouds, and (4) web-based visualization (e.g., of entire cities or countries).
Dr. Rico RICHTER has many years of experience in the development of complex
processing, analysis and visualization techniques for 3D spatial data. He studied IT
Systems Engineering at the Hasso Plattner Institute in Germany and has received his
PhD thesis in 2018. He works as research scientist at the computer graphics systems
group of the Hasso Plattner Institute and is author of more than 20 international
journal articles and conference papers related to 3D point cloud analysis and
visualization. Dr. Richter is founder and CEO of Point Cloud Technology GmbH, which
provides IT solutions for management and application of large-scale, highly detailed
point clouds.
