The iSimangaliso Wetland Park was listed as as South Africa’s first World Heritage Site in in December 1999 in in recognition of its global values The name iSimangaliso means miracle and wonder which aptly describes this unique place place No other place place has comparable ecological processes or the superlative natural beauty and biodiversity of iSimangaliso The 332 000-hectare Park contains three major lake systems systems eight interlinking ecosystems 700-year-old fishing traditions most of South Africa’s Africa’s remaining swamp forests Africa’s Africa’s largest estuarine system and 25 000 year old vegetated coastal dunes – amongst the the highest in the the world 10
