CUMSHING [aka: CUM SHING]
Old China Street, Canton
circa 1775-1895
Early pseudo hallmarks of
Cum Shing
From the items that have been found and catalogued that bear the Cum Shing silver mark, we know it is one of
the longest known working retail silversmiths in Canton.
Cum Shing, as with many of his counterparts, turned
their hand to creating flatware for the Western market.
Cum Shing, cutlery in the traditional Western neo-
classical patterns was certainly part of the early
repertoire but in the latter half of the 19th century Cum
Shing opted to create flatware embellished with
intricate traditional Chinese motifs. This circa 1890
dessert fork is part of a complete canteen that was
obviously custom made since all the pieces carry a
monogram.
