AN IRON-GLAZED KO-IMARI DISH
Edo period (late 17th century)

Molded in the shape of a leaf, the veins raised in relief and covered
in a thick brown iron-oxide glaze, the rim painted in cobalt blue, the
surface of the dish further decorated with a trailing vine of wisteria in
black enamel and gold and silver

The use of both gold and silver painted designs on iron-oxide
grounds seems to have fallen out of fashion after around 1670. For
