A COLLECTION MAINLY ILLUSTRATING THE BLUE AND WHITE
AND COLOURED PORCELAINS OF THE MING PERIOD

The idea of painting white porcelain with patterns in underglaze blue appears
to have been introduced from Persia at an indefinite date, but probably in the early

days of Ming rule about the beginning of the 15th century. A group such as this

—enables one to realise the difference in quality between this Ming blue and white and

the later wares of K'ang-Hsi and the iSth century generally shown in cases O and P.

The two earliest examples exhibited, possibly the two earliest pieces known in
Europe, are the bottle No. 454 and the bowl No. 457, with their very simple type of

           decoration.
