A SANCAI LOBED OVAL DISH
Liao Dynasty
The four-lobed dish moulded on the interior with a blossoming lotus
glazed with ochre and green surrounded by six green leaves and two
green buds against a cream ground, the lobed lipped rim moulded with
classic scroll covered with green glaze between fine raised borders
glazed ochre and punctuated by four ochre-glaze trefoils at the lobe
tips, box. 27.3cm (10¾in) wide (2).

A very similar dish in the Tokyo National Museum and dated to the Liao
Dynasty, 7th century, is illustrated by W.Watson, La Céramique Tang et

L’Art et La Matière, London, 1998, no.48.

The rough pottery body raised on a low circular foot and glazed on the
interior with an ochre medallion surrounded by green against a cream
ground splashed with further patches of ochre flanked by green and
with three spur marks, the top half of the exterior glazed ochre, wood
stand and box. 21.5cm (8½in) diam. (3).
