Christie’s is delighted to be entrusted with this private collection 55
of jade carvings and hardstones. A further sixteen lots from
this collection will be ofered at Christie’s South Kensington on A SUPERBLY CARVED PALE CELADON JADE BOULDER
November 13. The collector developed a fascination with Chinese CARVING
art in the 1950s and quickly became captivated by the beauty of QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795)
jade carvings. He acquired the majority of carvings during the
1960s, buying from major international auction houses including 清乾隆 青白玉高士圖山子
Christie’s and Sotheby’s. A number of pieces are illustrated in early
seminal works including Chinese Jades Throughout The Ages by The front is deeply carved and pierced with a scene depicting fve sages on a
S.C. Nott, London, 1936, and Early Chinese Jades by Pope Hennessy, tiered mountain scene. One fgure is crossing a small bridge beside a fowing
London, 1923. river, all beneath a small pavilion and pine trees. The reverse is carved with
jagged rocks and further overhanging pine trees. The stone is of a pale tone
